About the Welland Mayfly Fishers

Welland Mayfly Fishers Club was started in 2005 when a small group of angling friends had the opportunity to rent a 2 mile section of the River Welland at Harringworth on the border of Northamptonshire and Rutland and running directly under one of the 82 arches of the iconic Harringworth/Seaton Viaduct. WMF has a small membership with a maximum of 30 members primarily from the local area.

Fly fishing is mainly for Brown Trout with the season running from 1st of April to 31st October and currently the club has a adopted a no stocking policy which is helping and encouraging the Wild Brown Trout population to thrive and recruit. Catch and release is very much encouraged with the obligatory barbless hooks.
There is also the chance of catching the odd Grayling our 'Lady of The River'.

Course fishing is allowed from the 1st of November to the 14th of March, Chub, Dace, Roach and Pike are likely to be caught with the odd surprise fish species occasionally making an appearance.

Welland Mayfly is a club that has a sense of humour and fun but is at the same time committed to the many environmental concerns that our rivers are facing. The recording and monitoring of water quality, plus the invertebrate life is becoming increasingly important as a means of us 'keeping an eye on the river'.

The Club, from day one, with the backing of our Riparian Owner, has been actively involved with Habitat Improvement Projects working alongside the Environment Agency, The Wild Trout Trust and The East Mercia Rivers Trust.

As the name of the club implies, there is a Mayfly hatch that can rival hatches as seen on the more famous rivers of the South of England. A 'Mayfly' evening in the Welland Valley in late May, early June can be an unforgettable spectacle and the fishing can at times be 'explosive'.
